THE LEAD:
Ryan Innes' first career goal lifts The University of Hartford men's soccer past UMBC, for its first win in conference on Saturday night. Innes capitalized on a scrum inside the box, tapping in a pass from
Michael Balzan for the eventual game-winner.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Hawks started the match on their front foot, controlling the ball for the majority of the first half. Rasmus Karlsson ignited the offense in the fourth minute, sending the game's first shot at the net, but the attempt went just left.
- The opening aggression continues moments later, when, off an Alexis Triadis corner kick, Aitor Elena sent a shot that went just north of the crossbar.
- UMBC started the second half on the Hartford end of the field, but off a steal by Xahne Reid the Hawks turned the table. Reid started a fast break opportunity, feeding Gael Kisombe who put a missile on goal from 20 yards out. UMBC keeper Ciaran O'Loughlin answered with an acrobatic save, that kept the game scoreless.
- The Retrievers best chance came in the 67th minute when Jordan Dove sent a laser from 25 yards out. Hartford keeper Jimmy Slayton came out and kept the attack at bay.
- Innes netted his first career goal, when he tapped in a pass from Balzan in the 72nd minute, for the eventual game-winner.
