Volleyball Falls at First-Place UAlbany

THE LEAD:
First-place UAlbany topped the University of Hartford volleyball team on Sunday, scoring a 3-0 decision at University Gym in Albany, N.Y. Akubata Okenwa led the way with 10 kills for the Great Danes as UAlbany hit .308 as a team in the match, including .351 in a commanding final set.

Sophomore Jenna Bridges paced the Hawks with eight kills in the losing effort, while senior Astrid Mangual Duran tallied 21 assists.

  • UAlbany got out to an early lead in the first, scoring six of the first seven points behind five kills to go up, 6-1. Going down, 9-2, the Hawks rallied for four-straight points to close the gap to three at 9-6. But the Great Danes answered, putting together a 5-2 run to take a 14-8 lead. Hartford was unable to stage another rally, and UAlbany used an 8-2 run to close out the set on top, 25-16.
  • The Great Danes got off to another hot start in set two. Jumping out to a quick, 5-2, advantage, the home squad used a 7-1 run, including five-straight points, to extend a two-point lead to 13-5. Facing a 10-point deficit at 18-8, Hartford rallied for four-unanswered points to pull within six, but UAlbany answered with a 4-0 run of its own to regain a 10-point advantage (22-12) before closing out the set.   
  • Nine of the first 11 points of the third set belonged to the Great Danes, as they jumped out to an 11-2 lead. Pushing the pace and extending the advantage to 14-3, UAlbany cruised to the 14-point victory in the final set.
 
UP NEXT
The Hawks close out the 2017 regular season at home with a pair of conference matches, hosting New Hampshire on Thursday, Nov. 9 (6 p.m.) and UMass Lowell on Sunday, Nov. 12 (1 p.m.). Prior to Sunday's match with the River Hawks, Hartford will honor its five seniors in a Senior Day Ceremony.
