THE LEAD:
The University of Hartford baseball team lost its first America East Conference series of the season as Stony Brook claimed a 14-0 victory in the rubber match on Saturday. The teams split Friday's doubleheader, with the Hawks taking game one 8-7 before falling in game two 10-5.

The Seawolves took an early on Saturday, racing out to a 6-0 advantage in the bottom of the first inning, and never looked back. Stony Brook's Brandon Janofsky notched two of the Seawolves' nine hits and right fielder Dylan Resk added three RBIs. Hartford's pitchers struggled to find the strike zone, issuing 14 walks in the game.

Hawks starter John Mormile (0-1) was charged with six earned runs in .1 innings of work, while Hartford's batters struggled to figure out Stony Brook starter Brian Herrmann. Herrmann (2-2) tossed seven innings of three-hit ball and finished with five strikeouts. Center fielder Ashton Bardzell went 3-for-4 for the Hawks, while first baseman David MacKinnon (two hits) and left fielder Chris Sullivan logged Hartford's other hits.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Stony Brook surged to a 6-0 lead in the first inning. Left fielder Andruw Gazzola drew a bases-loaded walk, shortstop Nick Grande laced a two-run single to center and Resk connected for a three-run homer to left, chasing Mormile.
  • Gazzola made it 7-0 in the third when he singled, advanced on a walk and a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly to right field by designated hitter Michael Wilson.
  • The Seawolves added three runs in the fifth inning. Third baseman Jeremy Giles lined an RBI double to left before first baseman Casey Baker and Gazzola each picked up RBIs with bases-loaded walks to make it 10-4.
  • Stony Brook tacked on another four in its final at-bat in the eighth. First baseman Cody Clarke got the only hit of the inning, driving in a run with a double down the right field line, and the Seawolves added runs with a bases-loaded walk and a pair of wild pitches.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • MacKinnon continued to add to his momentum, logging his fourth multi-hit game in his last five outings, upping his average from .146 to .258 during that stretch.
  • Catcher Erik Ostberg's season-long hitting streak ended at 13 games with an 0-for-3 day at the plate. He still leads the team with a .472 average.
  • Saturday's loss marked the Hawks' first shutout this season and the team's first since suffering a 2-0 setback against Stony Brook on April 9, 2016.
  • Hartford's 14 walks were a season-high. After averaging 4.8 walks per game through their first 11 contests, the Hawks issued 33 free passes during the three-game series against Stony Brook.

NEXT UP:
Coming off its first America East Conference series of the season, Hartford will return home to host Holy Cross in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday, March 28, at 3:30 p.m. It will be just the second game at Fiondella Field for the Hawks this year, as Hartford won its home opener, 8-7, against Bryant last week.

The Hawks are 5-7 all-time against Holy Cross and have won the past two meetings. Hartford's last win against the Crusaders at home came in 2009, when Mike Amendola lifted a two-out walkoff single left, giving the Hawks a 13-12 victory in the 10th inning.
