THE LEAD:
The University of Hartford Baseball team picked up the first-ever win at Dunkin' Donuts Park, defeating Quinnipiac 6-4 on Tuesday night. The game, played in front of 2,910 fans, was the park's inaugural game, prior to the home opener for the Class AA Hartford Yard Goats on Thursday.
Sophomore left field Chris Sullivan turned in a strong performance for the Hawks, going 2-for-3 at the plate with a pair of doubles and three RBI. Sophomore pitcher Billy DeVito (2-1) picked up the win, throwing 2.1 shutout innings, allowing two hits and striking out three.
Quinnipiac battled back to tie the game at 4-4 in the top of the seventh, but the Hawks answered with two runs in the bottom half of the inning to seal the victory. Center fielder Ashton Bardzell and shortstop Ben Bengtson recorded back-to-back singles to open the inning and designated hitter Jackson Olson worked a walk to load the bases. Hartford made it 5-4 on a double-play ball by third baseman TJ Ward and the Hawks added an insurance run on Sullivan's second double of the night.
HOW THEY SCORED:
• Quinnipiac got on the board in the top of the first, scoring a run on a two-out balk.
• Hartford came right back with three in the bottom, the first run coming in on an Ashton Bardzell and the next two on bases-loaded walks.
• QU cut the deficit to 3-2 on a solo home run by Joe Burns to lead off the top of the fourth.
• The Bobcats knotted the score up in the top of the fifth on a two-out single through the right side by Ryan Nelson.
• The Hawks pulled back ahead in the bottom of the fifth when Sullivan drilled a double to the right-center gap to plate Ward.
• Quinnipiac used another two-out RBI single, this one in the top of the seventh off the bat of Burns, to tie the score at 4-4.
