THE LEAD:
The University of Hartford baseball team kept its winning streak alive Thursday, holding on for a 6-5 victory against Quinnipiac at Bob Fiondella Field. It was the fourth consecutive win for Hartford (15-19, 6-6 America East), tying the team's longest streak of the season, and senior first baseman David MacKinnon tied the program's all-time runs scored record during the game.

MacKinnon went 2-for-4 and scored three times in the victory, tying Earl Snyder's record of 146 career runs. Left fielder Nick Campana, who had previously been Hartford's regular starter in right, went 3-for-4, while center fielder Ashton Bardzell contributed two hits and two RBI.

The Hawks took control early and led 6-3 heading into the ninth inning, when the Quinnipiac battled back against Hartford closer Billy DeVito. Both Quinnipiac runs came with two outs, on back-to-back RBI singles from catcher Evan Vulgamore and second baseman Ryan Nelson, before DeVito got Mike Palladino to fly out to deep center field to end the game.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Hartford manufactured a pair of runs in the first inning. Campana led off with a single and came around to score on an RBI groundout by shortstop Ben Bengtson. MacKinnon, who also singled, eventually scored on a sacrifice fly from third baseman TJ Ward.
  • The Hawks made it 3-0 in the third when Campana drove in right fielder Trevor Thompson.
  • Quinnipiac got on the board in the fourth inning with a leadoff home run by Joseph Burns and tied the game later in the frame on a passed ball and a wild pitch.
  • MacKinnon helped break the tie in the bottom of the fifth, giving the Hawks a 4-3 advantage when he doubled and scored on a single by Thompson.
  • Bardzell made it 6-3 in the sixth when he roped a two-out, two-run single to center field, scoring MacKinnon and catcher Bryce Ramsay.
  • The Bobcats rallied for a pair of runs with two outs in the top of the ninth. Vulgamore and Nelson each recorded singles to drive in the runs.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • With three runs scored on the day, MacKinnon tied Snyder (1995-'98) for the No. 1 spot on the Hawks' career runs scored list, with 146.
  • MacKinnon notched his 18th multi-hit game this season, which leads the team. Campana and Bardzell each have 15 games with at least two hits.
  • MacKinnon has hit safely in 24 of the past 25 games.
  • Bardzell leads all active players with a .362 batting average, while MacKinnon is one point back at .361.
  • Sophomore starter Jake Regula went 2.2 scoreless innings for the Hawks, allowing two hits and striking out two in the no-decision.
  • Mormile tossed two shutout innings to earn his third win of the season.
  • Hartford finished with 11 hits in the game, marking the 17th time the team has collected at least 10 hits in a game. The Hawks have accomplished that feat five times in the past seven games and seven times in their past 11 contests.
  • Thursday's win was Hartford's second victory against Quinnipiac this season. The Hawks also defeated the Bobcats, 6-4, when the two teams opened Dunkin' Donuts on April 11.

NEXT UP:
Hartford returns to America East action this weekend when the Hawks travel to face UMass Lowell (20-16, 8-6 AE) for a three-game set. The series will feature a Saturday doubleheader beginning at noon, with Sunday's finale also scheduled for a noon first pitch.

The River Hawks (20-18, 8-6 AE) currently sit in third place in the conference standings behind Binghamton (20-8, 9-2 AE) and UMBC (14-17, 7-5 AE), but UML is tied with Hartford in the loss column. If the Hawks take two of this weekend's games, Hartford will be in a dead heat with the River Hawks with just two weekends remaining in the regular season.
