Women's Soccer Falls at FDU in Season Opener

THE BASICS:

RESULT: Fairleigh Dickinson 3, Hartford 1
RECORDS: Hartford (0-1); FDU (1-1)
LOCATION: University Stadium (Teaneck, N.J.)

THE LEAD:

The University of Hartford women's soccer team dropped a 3-1 decision in its 2017 season opener at Fairleigh Dickinson on Sunday afternoon. Freshman defender Magalie Kayrouz scored the Hawks' lone goal 46 seconds into the second half to trim a 2-0 halftime deficit down to one, but Elma Kolenovic sealed the win for the Knights with a score in the 77th minute. Daria Jones and Viktorija Miseljic also added goals for FDU.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Not long after a strike off the boot of junior Julia Carr hit the crossbar and suffered an unlucky bounce right in front of the goal line, Jones took a corner from Jessi Reinhardt and was able to head it through to give FDU a 1-0 advantage in the 16th minute.
  • The Hawks picked up the attack, but were unable to get one past FDU keeper Amanda Fitzgerald, who was forced into action three times within a 10-minute stretch.
  • The Knights doubled their advantage 22 minutes after breaking open the match, as Miseljic scored her third goal of the year after winning a foot race on a through ball at the top of the box in the 37th minute.
  • FDU took a 2-0 lead into the halftime break, but the Hawks were quick to strike out of the intermission. Just 46 seconds into the stanza, Kayrouz came through to cut the Hawks' deficit in half, cleaning up on a failed clear attempt by the Knights.
  • With 13:40 left to play, FDU extended its lead to 3-1. Kolenovic delivered the insurance goal after beating the Hawks' keeper with a low strike to the left.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS & NOTES:
  • Hartford, which held a 10-6 edge in shots, put six of its attempts on goal to force Fitzgerald into action a match-high five times.
  • Carr led the Hawks' attack with four shot attempts, while junior Hayley Nolan and Kayrouz took two apiece.
  • Making her collegiate debut, Kayrouz netted her first career goal. It marks the third time in as many years that a Hartford rookie finds the back of the net in a season opener.
  • In her Hawks' debut, rookie Maia Perez came away with one save.
  • The Hawks fall to 6-3-1 all-time against FDU. The Knights have won three of the last four in the series.

UP NEXT:
The Hawks remain on the road for their next match, as they are set to head to Holy Cross on Thursday, Aug. 24. Opening kickoff from Linda Johnson Smith Soccer Stadium is set for 7 p.m.
