Women's Soccer Comes up Short at Holy Cross in 1-0 Decision

THE BASICS:

RESULT: Holy Cross 1, Hartford 0
RECORDS: Hartford (0-2); Holy Cross (1-2)
LOCATION: Linda Johnson Smith Soccer Stadium (Worcester, Mass.)

THE LEAD:

A goal in the 58th minute from Megan Lawlor led Holy Cross past the University of Hartford women's soccer team on Thursday, as the Crusaders came away with a 1-0 decision at Linda Johnson Smith Soccer Stadium. Lawlor broke through the Hawks' defense on a corner kick to disrupt a scoreless match and eventually propel Holy Cross to the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Hawks got off to a strong start out of the gates, testing the Holy Cross back line often in the opening minutes. Within the first 11 minutes of action, Hartford produced a handful of quality scoring chances, but came up empty as keeper Caroline Cashion turned away each of the three shots she faced. Hartford keeper Maia Perez made two of her three saves in the first half, coming away with a late stop on a shot from Bridgette Dwyer to keep the match deadlocked at 0-0 at the break.
  • After a scoreless first half, Lawlor broke the stalemate open and gave Holy Cross the edge at the 57:55 with her first goal of the year. Following a corner kick served into the box by Emily George, she connected off the bounce to make it a 1-0 Crusaders' lead.
  • Hartford tallied four shots during the remainder of the match, producing a pair of threats over the final four minutes. With 3:23 left, the Hawks generated a corner kick, but freshman Magalie Kayrouz's header from inside of the box missed just wide of the goal.
  • With time expiring, sophomore Bridgette Alexander gave the Hawks one final look at the equalizer. Cashion was in place to make the save – her sixth of the night – to seal the win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS & NOTES:
  • Cashion made five saves in goal for the Crusaders, including four in the first half to keep the match scoreless at the break.
  • Hartford held a 12-9 advantage in shots, led by Carr, who put each of her three attempts on goal. Each team finished with three corner kick attempts.
  • Perez came away with three stops between the posts for the Hawks.
  • Hartford, which snapped an 11-match unbeaten streak against Holy Cross, dips to 11-2-1 in the all-time series.
