First-Half Surge Propels Brown Past Women's Soccer

THE BASICS:

RESULT: Brown 4, Hartford 0
RECORDS: Hartford (0-3-1); Brown (3-0-0)
LOCATION: Al-Marzook Field at Alumni Stadium (West Hartford, Conn.)

THE LEAD:

Brown University scored three times in the first half and never looked back, as the visiting Bears defeated the University of Hartford, 4-0, on Thursday evening. Mikela Waldman netted a hat trick to pace the Bears, who remain undefeated in 2017.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Hartford goalkeeper Maia Perez was tested early by the Brown attack, making a pair of saves in the first 5:13 to keep the match scoreless.
  • Waldman connected on a scrum out of a Bears' throw-in to break open the match in the 12th minute. The senior sent a header through the Hawks' defense from just outside the six-yard box to give Brown the early edge.
  • Eleven minutes later at the 22:14 mark, Waldman struck again from four yards out to double Brown's lead to 2-0. A lateral pass from Jennifer Caruso set up the shot, which was sent into the lower right part of the net.
  • Brown made it a 3-0 lead before the halftime break, as Abby Carchio found the back of the net on a high shot to the upper left corner. Star White set up the tally with a lateral pass inside the box.
  • The Hawks had an opportunity to get on the board right before halftime, but Brown goalkeeper Christine Etzel came away with her third save of the night on a long shot from sophomore forward Bridgette Alexander.
  • Waldman closed out the scoring for the Bears 2:25 into the second half after putting the finishing touches on a baseline pass from Caruso from three yards out.
  • Down the stretch, the Hawks picked up the pressure and produced a pair of opportunities, but junior Julia Carr's rifle was saved by Brown's newly-inserted keeper, Rylee Shumway, before freshman Beatriz Correia's shot from just outside of the 18-yard box was sent just high of the goal.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS & NOTES:
  • Brown held a slight, 13-11 advantage in shots and an 8-4 edge in shots on goal.
  • Hartford finished with a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.
  • Perez finished with four saves, while her counterpart, Etzel, registered a trio of saves in 84 minutes of action. In six minutes of relief between the posts for Brown, Shumway turned away one shot.
  • The Hawks hold an 11-3-0 advantage in the all-time series.
