Four Score as Women's Soccer Downs Delaware State, 4-0

THE BASICS:

RESULT: Hartford 4, Delaware State 0
RECORDS: Hartford (1-3-1); Delaware State (0-7-0)
LOCATION: Al-Marzook Field at Alumni Stadium (West Hartford, Conn.)

THE LEAD:

Four different players found the back of the net on Sunday, as the University of Hartford women's soccer team defeated Delaware State by a 4-0 final on a rain-soaked Al-Marzook Field at Alumni Stadium. Sophomore Sierra Stone netted the game-winner in the 19th minute while classmates Kaila Lozada and Skylar Vitiello and junior Julia Carr tacked on insurance tallies for the Hawks, who held the Hornets to just two shot attempts in their first shutout of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Hawks pushed the pace early, with sophomore Bridgette Alexander, junior Hayley Nolan and Lozada combining for four early scoring threats to force Leslie Fazio into action four times. The DSU keeper was on the ball, though, making saves on each of those attempts to keep the match scoreless.
  • In the 19th minute, Stone became the first Hawk to break through the Hornets' defense. A lateral cross from Alexander out of a corner kick set up the go-ahead and eventual game-winning tally, which was booted over Fazio to make it a 1-0 lead in favor of Hartford.
  • Hartford capitalized on a breakaway in the 27th minute to extend its advantage to 2-0. Carr started the play that translated to the goal, sending a downfield pass to Lozada, who finished with a low strike to the right.
  • The Hawks kept DSU's attack at bay in the first, with a wide shot from Jasmine Warren in the 22nd minute standing as DSU's lone opportunity in that stretch. Hartford finished with a commanding, 10-1 first-half advantage in shots.
  • In the 66th minute, Hartford tacked on an insurance goal thanks to Vitiello's first of the year. Corralling a high cross from Nolan, she chipped in a high shot to the upper right part of the net to extend the Hawks' lead to 3-0.
  • Carr got in on the scoring action late in the match, pushing the advantage to 4-0 in the 89th minute. Set up by a pass from freshman Beatriz Correia, the forward's first goal of the season came on an open look from on top of the 18-yard box.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS & NOTES:
  • Tacking on an assist, Carr finished the match with a season-high three points. Correia's assist on Carr's goal in the final two minutes marked her first career point.
  • Making saves on eight of the Hawks' 10 first-half shots, Fazio finished the match with a game-best 11 stops.
  • On the other end, Hawks' keeper Maia Perez, a freshman, came away with one save to earn her first career shutout victory between the posts.
  • Hartford posted a dominant defensive effort, limiting the Hornets to just a pair of shot attempts. The Hawks finished the match with a commanding, 21-2 advantage in the category.
  • DSU held a slight edge in corner kicks at 3-2.
  • Hartford improves to 2-0 against Delaware State, previously taking last year's meeting by a 4-0 final.
