A furious comeback attempt by the University of Hartford women's soccer team came up short, as LIU Brooklyn topped the Hawks, 3-2, on Thursday afternoon. Facing a three-goal deficit early in the second half, freshman Karoline Petersen and junior Julia Carr each scored to pull the Hawks within one, but Hartford was unable to complete the comeback.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Hawks controlled the match in the early going, holding a commanding, 10-3 advantage in shots, but LIU Brooklyn was the first team to strike the scoreboard. Apage Alexander broke the game open in the 38th minute, giving the Blackbirds the 1-0 advantage with her first goal of the season.
- LIU Brooklyn came out of the halftime gates firing, scoring twice within the first 3:08 to quickly extend its lead to 3-0. Kimberly Butland connected on cross and slipped it past Stefanie Szot - the Hawks' newly-inserted keeper -Â Â 16 seconds out of the halftime break to make it a 2-0 lead in favor of the Blackbirds.
- Less than three minutes later in the 49th minute Jenn Peters tripled the Blackbirds' halftime lead with her fourth goal of the year after scoring on a rebound from a saved shot.
- Hartford mounted a comeback, though, ending the match with two-unanswered tallies while producing several scoring threats down the stretch. The rally began for the Hawks in the 56th minute when sophomore Kaila Lozada played a ball into the box from the left side, finding Petersen, who put the Hawks on the board with a shot over the keeper.
- The rally effort continued in the 85th minute when Carr pulled Hartford within one with her second goal of the year. After corralling a cross from sophomore Bridgette Alexander inside of the box, she stuffed the Hawks' second goal of the match into the back of the net.
- Hartford continued to apply pressure, but LIU Brooklyn's defense held the Hawks to just one final shot in the closing minutes, .
