THE LEAD:
Nyrik Antoine's first career goal in the closing minutes tied the score, as the University of Hartford men's soccer team rallied to earn a 1-1 draw against Iona on Saturday night. Each team had solid chances in overtime, but neither was able to break the deadlock late.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- In the 22nd minute, Iona sent a cross into the box which deflected off a Hawk defender into the goal giving the Gaels an early 1-0 lead.
- Hartford created a number of quality chances in the second half. In the 77th minute Nyrik Antoine sent a shot from five yards out which was punched away by Juan Alcantara. Antoine quickly followed up seconds later with a header attempt that was blocked by an Iona defender, causing a corner kick.
- Off the corner kick, Aitor Elena sent a header at the goal, which Alcantara got a hand on. Andre Morrison rebounded the shot and quickly sent a missile that missed narrowly wide right.
- The Hawks stayed resilient in the closing minutes of the game, which paid off in the 88th minute when Antoine netted his first career goal, off a pass from Rasmus Karlsson, to tie the game up at one.
- In the pair of overtime periods both teams had numerus opportunities, including a shot from Morrison that missed just high, but could not break the deadlock. Â Â
