Hawks fall at Monmouth 3-1

THE BASICS:

RESULT: Hartford 1, Monmouth 3
RECORDS: Hartford (2-4-2); Monmouth (3-4-1)

THE LEAD:
The University of Hartford men's soccer team fell, 3-1, on the road at Monmouth on Wednesday night.  Monmouth jumped out to a two-goal lead early in the second half, before Alexis Triadis netted his first goal of the season to jumpstart a Hartford rally moments later. Monmouth netted the game sealing goal in the 89th minute to give the Hawks the decision.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • In opening minutes, both squads split possession until Monmouth's John Antunes sent the first goal of the game into the upper right corner of the net from 20 yards out to put the Hawks up 1-0.  
  • Jimmy Slayton kept Monmouth at bay for the remainder of the half, stuffing a pair of quality looks.
  • Monmouth extended their lead in the early minutes of the second half. Off a scrum in the box, Colin Stripling found the back of the net past a diving Slayton.
  • A Monmouth foul in the 58th minute set up a free kick for Alexis Triadis, who would take full advantage. Triadis sent the free kick to the upper 90 for his first goal of 2017 campaign.
  • Hartford had a number quality opportunities for the equalizer in the closing minutes. Nyrik Antoine sent a shot from just outside the box, that was tipped away by Bobby Edwards. Ryan Innes followed moments later with a shot from point blank range that Edwards kept out of the net.
  • Monmouth netted the game sealing goal in the 89th minute. Off a pass from Dan Frisch-Harmon, Stripling send a shot to the upper left corner of the net to put the Hawks up 3-1.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS & NOTES:
  • Monmouth held a slight shot advantage 12-11.
  • Hartford owned a 7-4 corner kick advantage.
  • Slayton finished with five saves on the night.
UP NEXT:
They will continue the longest road trip of the season on Saturday afternoon, with a trip to UMass. The road swing will wrap up with a matchup against in-state rival Central Connecticut on Wednesday, Sept. 27.
