THE LEAD:
Â
Gabriela Gamory picked the perfect time to net her first career goal, as the freshman's tally 68 seconds into overtime led the University of Hartford women's soccer team to a 2-1 win against the visiting Maine Black Bears on Thursday night. Sophomore
Kaila Lozada also scored for the Hawks, who improve to 2-0 in America East action with their fourth-straight win.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Five minutes in, Lozada provided the Hawks with a 1-0 lead with her team-best fifth goal of the year in the fifth minute. The forward connected on a long ball sent into the box from junior Julia Carr, and after beating a defender with a dribble to her left, she beat Black Bears' keeper Annalena Kriebisch with a low strike to the near post to put Hartford in front.
- Hartford's defense applied the pressure, as Maine did not spend a lot of time in its attacking third in the opening half. The Black Bears did manage to reach the scoreboard and knot up the game, though, as Nicole Bailey scored from 14 yards away on a downfield pass from Emilie Andersen to make it 1-1 in the 22nd minute.
- Despite the Hawks holding an 8-3 second-half advantage in shots in the second half, the score remained tied for the remainder of regulation.
- After Hartford keeper Maia Perez came away with an easy save in the opening part of extra time, Gamory found the back of the net for the golden goal in the 92nd minute after redshirt-sophomore Molly Socha forced a turnover on a Maine clear attempt. Tracking down a loose ball played into the box by Socha following the steal, Gamory used her left foot to loft a shot from point-blank range past Kriebisch to seal the win for the Hawks.
Â
INSIDE THE NUMBERS & NOTES:
- The field tilted heavily in favor of Hartford for most of the match, as the Hawks held an 18-6 advantage in shots, including a 9-2 benefit in the first half.
- The Hawks also closed out the match with a 3-1 edge in corner kicks.
- Perez and Kriebisch each came away with four saves on the night.
- The offense has been clicking as of late for Lozada, as she has recorded at least one goal in three of her last four outings, totaling nine points during that stretch.
- Hartford's current four-game winning streak is the longest of the 2017 season, and the longest since 2016, when the Hawks won four-straight from Oct. 13 through Oct. 30.
