Stony Brook Slips Past Volleyball

THE BASICS:

THE LEAD:
Katy Henchy led all players with 13 kills, but Stony Brook earned a clinching fourth set, 27-25, to top the Hartford volleyball team 3-1 on Friday night.
 
Cydney Bowman and McKyla Brooks each delivered 12 kills to lead the Seawolves, while LeAnne Sakowicz hit .700, dished out 40 assists and added three blocks. Kiani Kerstetter led all players with 12 digs, while Kardasia Hitchcock added 11 and Emily Costello 10.
 
Megan Anderson delivered 31 assists in a losing effort for the Hawks, adding three blocks as well. Jenna Bridges and Brittany Braun each posted three blocks, while Bridges notched three aces in a losing effort.
 
SET-BY-SET
• The teams traded points to a 4-3 lead in favor of the Seawolves, but Stony Brook embarked on an 8-1 rally to open a 12-4 advantage. Hartford was able to trim the deficit to six on multiple occasions, but Stony Brook closed out the set with a 25-14 victory.
• The second got out to a gloomy start for the Hawks, with Stony Brook opening a 10-4 lead early on. But Hartford delivered a 3-0 run and a 5-0 run in rapid succession, capped off by a Bridges ace, to knot things up at 12-12. After trading points to 14-all, Hartford delivered three straight, the final one on a Braun kill, to garner a 17-14 advantage. SBU rallied back to regain a 21-20 lead, but the Hawks finished off the set with five of the last six points to earn a 25-22 triumph.
• The third saw the home squad open a quick 10-1 lead and never look back, en route to a 25-12 victory.
• The two teams came out neck-and-neck in the fourth, with 10 ties in the first 15 points en route to a 15-15 score. Hartford embarked on a rally with Nicole Etta on the serve, rolling off four straight for a 19-15 lead. The Seawolves battled back, though, chipping away at the deficit to tie the score at 23-all. The squads traded points to 25-25, but SBU got the final two to take the set, 27-25, and the match 3-1.
