Hawks Fall Victim to Late Sacred Heart Comeback

THE BASICS:

RESULT: Sacred Heart 2, Hartford 1
RECORDS: Hartford (1-4-1); Sacred Heart (2-4-0)
LOCATION: Park Avenue Field (Fairfield, Conn.)

THE LEAD:

The University of Hartford women's soccer team was unable to hold on to a late lead at Sacred Heart, as the Pioneers scored twice in the final eight minutes to defeat the Hawks, 2-1, on Thursday. Sierra Stone gave the Hawks the lead with her second goal of the year in the 68th minute, but Sacred Heart used goals in the 82nd and 88th minutes to steal the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • After controlling the first half with a commanding, 10-3 advantage in shots, the Hawks broke through the Pioneers' defense in the 68th minute to take the edge. After tracking down a deflection in the middle of the box, Stone dribbled and hit the upper left part of the net for her second goal in as many games.
  • With just over eight minutes to go, Sacred Heart netted the equalizer as Maranda Gibbons put the finishing touches on a lead pass from Melanie DaSilva.
  • Momentum continued to tilt in favor of the Pioneers for the remainder of the match. Within a stretch of two minutes, Sacred Heart generated three corner kicks, reaching the back of the net on the final attempt. Danielle Karpiej took the honors on the corner kick, finding the head of Maranda Gibbons for the game-winning tally with 2:13 left to play.
  • With limited time left, the Hawks had one final chance at tying up the match. Sophomore Kaila Lozada's had her shot get blocked at the 88:12 mark, but Hartford was unable to capitalize out of the ensuing corner kick.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS & NOTES:
  • Outshooting the Pioneers by an 18-8 margin, the Hawks put nine of their attempts on target.
