THE BASICS:

RESULT: Hartford 56, UMBC 78
RECORDS: Hartford (10-9, 3-2 AE); UMBC (13-7, 5-1 AE)
LOCATION: RAC Arena (Baltimore, Md.)

THE LEAD:
The UMBC Retrievers took advantage of a cold shooting night by the University of Hartford men's basketball team, as it took a 78-56 decision in Baltimore on Monday night. UMBC's Jairus Lyles led all scorers with 35 points, while junior Jason Dunne led the Hawks with 22 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Coming off a school-record breaking day from three-point land on Saturday against Binghamton, Hartford started right where it left off against the Retrievers. A pair of threes from junior Travis Weatherington and Dunne gave the Hawks a 6-2 lead in the opening minutes on the game. The Retrievers quickly responded, though, using a 17-5 run to push ahead, 21-11, with less than 10 minutes remaining in the half.
  • The Hawks cut into their deficit, scoring nine of the game's next 12 points to pull within four. But UMBC went on to score the final seven points of the opening half to take a 31-20 lead at the break.
  • On five points from senior Hassan Attia, the Hawks opened the second half on an 8-2 run which cut the UMBC lead to five. This was the closest the Hawks would come in the second half, though, as the Retrievers gradually built on their lead for the remainder of the game to take the eventual 78-56 decision.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS & NOTES:
  • The Retrievers knocked down six more shots from long range, finishing with a 12-6 edge. The Hawks outscored the Retrievers from the free-throw line with a 12-8 edge.
  • Entering the game as one of the hottest shooting teams in the America East, Hartford was held to 34.5 percent shooting from the field (19-of-55), including a 24.0 percent (6-of-25) clip from long range.
  • The Hawks recorded three blocks, with Attia coming away with one rejection, He is one block shy of the century mark on his career.
  • Junior Jack Hobbs came away with three steals to tie a career high.
  • Freshman Petr Stepanyants netted his first collegiate basket (2 points) in the game.
