THE LEAD:

The University of Hartford men's basketball team dropped a heartbreaker on Saturday, as Stony Brook's Tyrell Sturdivant knocked down a three-pointer with 2.5 seconds left to lead the visiting Seawolves past the Hawks, 63-61. Redshirt-junior John Carroll scored 15 points to pace the Hawks, who snapped a three-winning streak with the defeat.

Sturdivant was one of four Seawolves to score in double figures, finishing with 10 points. Akwasi Yeboah and Junior Saintel each paced Stony Brook with 14 points, while UC Iroegbu added 10.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Hawks came out of the gates hot, scoring 13 of the game's first 17 points the early lead. Momentum shifted in Stony Brook's favor over the next three-plus minutes, though, as the Seawolves took a 17-15 edge behind the strength of a 13-2 run.
  • The two sides exchanged baskets to the tune of a 23-22 Hawks' edge thanks to a three-pointer by junior J.R. Lynch, but an 8-2 run put the lead back in the Seawolves' hands with 4:14 left in the half.
  • Stony Brook would go on to open up its largest lead of the half – a seven-point edge – with less than a minute left, but back-to-back buckets from reserves Andrew Ramirez and George Blagojevic closed the gap to three (38-35) at the break.
  • Falling behind by seven in the opening minutes of the second, Hartford made a huge run to reclaim the advantage. Carroll got the rally going with a three-point play, and following a bucket by Saintel, the Hawks went off for 14-straight points. Junior Travis Weatherington capped that run with a three-pointer to put Hartford up by eight (52-44) with 8:43 left.
  • Back-to-back three-pointers from Stony Brook's Bryan Sekunda and Iroegbu quickly cut Hartford's eight-point lead down to two with 3:23 left, before Iroegbu tied up the game at 58-58 with a pair of free throws with 2:09 to go.
  • With 11.6 seconds left, Lynch went coast-to-coast and banked in a floater to give Hartford a 61-60 lead. But Sturdivant spoiled the late advantage, drilling an NBA-range three-pointer to put the Seawolves up by two with 2.5 seconds left. Hartford had one last chance for the win, but was unable to get a shot up in time.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE & NOTES:
  • Carroll led the Hawks in scoring for the fifth-straight game and improved his career-best double-figure scoring streak to 10 games. It marks the longest streak for a Hartford player this season.
  • Carroll finished with a game-high eight rebounds as the Hawks held a 31-29 advantage on the boards.
  • Lynch (14 points) and classmate Jason Dunne (10) also improved upon double-figure scoring streaks, as they have reached the mark in each of their last seven games.
  • Hartford shot above 50 percent (51%; 25-of-49) for the second-straight game. The Hawks held the Seawolves to 39.3 percent shooting (22-of-56) including a 29.3 percent clip in the second half.
  • Stony Brook received a huge contribution off its bench, outscoring the Hawks' reserves by a 22-11 margin.
  • Saturday's setback marks the fourth time this season that Hartford falls by five points or fewer.
  • Stony Brook has won each of the last 11 games of the series.
