THE LEAD:
The University of Hartford baseball team dropped its opening game of the season, 17-1, to No. 17 South Alabama in Mobile on Friday night.
After the Hawks jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning, the Jaguars scored 17 straight off 11 hits to take the 17-1 decision.
HOW IT HAPPENEDÂ Â Â Â Â Â

- The Hawks opened strong, scoring the game's first run when junior Ashton Bardzell reached on an error and later scored on a wild pitch.
- The Jaguars quickly responded in the bottom half of the inning, scoring off a Travis Swaggerty solo home run to knot the game up at one.
- South Alabama took control of the game in the bottom of the second, scoring four runs off three hits and a Hawks error to take a 5-1 lead. Â
- The Jaguars never looked back, tacking on three in the fourth, two in the seventh and seven in the eighth to seal the first game of the three-game set.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS

- Redshirt-junior Jake Regula was credited with the loss, going three innings while giving up four hits and six earned runs.
- Senior Nick Campana went 2-4 with a double, while junior Chris Sullivan also finished 2-4.
