THE LEAD:

The University of Hartford women's lacrosse team fell to visiting St. Francis on Monday, dropping a 20-7 decision on Al-Marzook Field at Alumni Stadium. Jessica Mazzur led the Red Flash with a game-high four goals, adding an assist for five points, while Morgan Day also tallied five points on three goals and two assists.

Freshman Birdie Montes paced six Hartford goal scorers with a pair of goals.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Hartford and St. Francis exchanged goals to the tune of a 2-2 tie after 10 minutes of action. The Red Flash put together the game's first run, netting three unanswered within a 78-second stretch, but the Hawks responded with two straight tallies from junior Billy McLaughlin and freshman Melissa Gratwicke to pull within 5-4.
  • The Hawks wouldn't come any closer, though, as St. Francis closed out the half with four-straight scores to take a 9-4 lead at the end of the first. Mazzur struck twice during that spurt.
  • A dominant start to the second half allowed the Red Flash to run away with the game. After freshman Debbie Phillips answered a St. Francis goal from Emileigh Scott with her sixth of the season, the Red Flash used a 9-0 run to put the game out of reach.

  • Rookies Jenna Pupillo, Kaitlyn D'Andrea and Montes finished with three ground balls apiece to pace the Hawks in the category.
