Behind five home runs, The University of Hartford baseball team topped in-state rival Fairfield, 13-11, in the Hawks first home game of the season on Wednesday afternoon.

Junior Ashton Bardzell blasted a pair of home runs, finishing with four RBIs while Senior Nick Campana went 3-for-5 and batted in four runs of his own in the Hawks first win of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Bardzell opened the game with a bang, hitting a two-run shot for his first home run of the season in the first inning.
  • Sophomore Zachary Ardito led off the second inning with an infield single, later scoring when he stole home as redshirt-junior Cam Belliveau stole second. Belliveau was driven in by senior Nick Campana ripped an RBI double down the left field line. After as Bardzell walk, junior Chris Sullivan and sophomore Jackson Olson both hit RBI singles, putting the Hawks up 6-0.
  • The Stags put one run up in the top of the third before freshman John Thrasher led off the bottom half of the inning with a solo home run, the first of his career.
  • After a quiet fourth frame from both teams, Belliveau reached on a one-out single in the bottom of the fifth. Campana immediately drove Belliveau in with a two-run shot to left before senior TJ Ward was hit by a pitch and driven in when Bardzell went yard for the second time on the day, putting the Hawks ahead, 11-1.
  • Fairfield would not go out without a fight, hitting a two-run home run of their own in the top half of the sixth before scoring four in the seventh to cut the Hawks lead to, 12-7.
  • After Campana singled to the left side in the eighth, he advanced to third on a double from freshman Drew DeMartino, his first career hit, and scored on a wild pitch to Bardzell, extending the Hawks lead to 13-7.
  • The Stags hung tough, scoring four runs in the top of the ninth off a three-RBI double from Mitch Williams and an RBI single from Tom Ryan, but the Hawks held on for the 13-11 decision.
