THE LEAD:
 
A hot start led LIU Brooklyn to a 19-2 victory against the visiting University of Hartford women's lacrosse team on Saturday. The Black Birds jumped out to a 6-0 lead midway through the first and never looked back.

Freshman Kaitlyn D'Andrea and junior Billy McLaughlin each scored one goal to pace the Hawks' offense, while Bianca Santucci, Sierra O'Connor and Amanda Masullo recorded hat tricks for LIU Brooklyn.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
  • O'Connor and Santucci each struck twice in the opening part of the first half to help LIU Brooklyn build an early six-goal edge.
  • D'Andrea ended the run with 15:22 left in the stanza with her fourth goal of the year, but three more Black Birds' goals would push the advantage to 9-1 with six minutes left until halftime.
  • McLaughlin struck with her team-leading 10th tally to put another one on the board for Hartford, but LIU Brooklyn ended the game with a 10-0 run to seal the win.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE & NOTES:
 
  • LIU Brooklyn outshot Hartford by a 36-10 margin.
  • The Black Birds also held the advantage in draw controls (16-7) and ground balls (16-10).
  • Melissa Gratwicke grabbed three ground balls to pace the Hawks. She also forced four turnovers, a team-best.
