THE LEAD:

Pitching shined as the University of Hartford baseball team split its Dunkin' Donuts Park doubleheader, defeating CCSU, 2-1, before dropping a 1-0 decision to UConn.

Sophomore Nathan Florence pitched a stellar seven scoreless innings, striking out 12 in the afternoon's opening game against the neighboring Blue Devils. In game two, defending America East Co-Pitcher and Rookie of the Week Nicholas Dombkowski went seven innings, surrendering just one earned run on five hits against the Huskies.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game 1
  • After a quiet first four innings, the Hawks broke through and got on the board in the home half of the fifth. Junior Drew Holtgrieve ripped a two-out single to right field and was driven in on an RBI single to left by senior Nick Campana to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead.
  • Junior Ashton Bardzell led off the sixth inning with a double down the left field line. He was later driven in on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Zachary Ardito to extend the Hawks' lead to two.
  • The Blue Devils wouldn't go away wihtout a fight, though, scoring on a sacrifice fly in the eighth. But Hartford clamped down to take the 2-1 decision against CCSU.
Game 2
  • Similar to game one, both pitchers in the tailend of the twinbill were solid, combining for just eleven 11 hits.
  • The Huskies broke the scoreless tie in the seventh inning, as John Toppa lifted a sacrifice fly to center to bring home the game's only run to take the 1-0 decision.

NEXT ON TAP:
The Hawks will return to Fiondella Field on Tuesday afternoon as they take on Sacred Heart.
