Baseball Tops Quinnipiac, 8-2

THE LEAD:
 
Behind 14 hits, the University of Hartford baseball team topped Quinnipiac, 8-2, on Tuesday afternoon in West Hartford,
 
Senior TJ Ward drove in a game-high three runs, while freshman John Thrasher went three-for-three, scoring three times for the Hawks.  
   
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Bobcats struck first, scoring a pair of runs in the second off four hits taking an early 2-0 lead.
  • The Hawks quickly responded in the bottom half of the frame, junior Drew Holtgrieve ripped a double to right center and was quickly driven in by a Thrasher single through the left side. Thrasher advanced to second off a wild pitch and was later driven in by a senior Nick Campana single to second which knotted the game up a two.
  • Thrasher crossed the plate again in the fourth, working a one-out walk, advancing to second on a Campana sacrifice bunt and to third and scoring off a wild pitch, giving the Hawks a 3-2 lad.
  • Thrasher led off the sixth inning by ripping a double to left center, scoring off an Ashton Bardzell SAC fly to right. Ward added to the Hawks lead later that inning, driving in Campana, who reached on a single to center, singling through the left side. Sophomore Jackson Olson added one more for the Hawks, singling to right field and driving in junior Chris Sullivan, putting the Hawks up 6-2.
  • The Ward tacked on two more for the Hawks in the eighth, reaching on an error by the shortstop and driving in Bardzell and sophomore Bryce Walker.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Redshirt Tyler Coppo earned his first career victory, throwing three hitless innings and striking out three Bobcats.
  • Sophomore Zachary Ardito extended his hit streak to 11 with his double in the fifth.
