RESULTS: Hartford 12 Sacred Heart 10

THE LEAD:

An eighth-inning home run from senior TJ Ward lifted the University of Hartford baseball team over the Sacred Heart Pioneers, 12-10, at Fiondella Field on Tuesday afternoon.

Senior Nick Campana's hot bat continued as he went 4-for-5, driving in two runs and scoring twice while junior Seth Pinkerton recorded his eighth save of the season and 12th of his career to tie Kurt Greshaw (90-92) and Jeremy Charles (13-15) for the most in program history.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Pioneers opened the game up in a big way, scoring five runs off six hits in the opening frame before the Hawks responded and knotted the game back up at five in the bottom half of the frame.
  • Sophomore Bryce Walker laced an RBI triple to center field before junior Ashton Bardzell reached on an error by the shortstop to drive Walker cut the Sacred Heart lead to, 5-2. After Ward reached on an infield single to put runners on first and second, sophomore Jackson Olson blasted a three-run homer to right, tying the game at five.
  • The Hawk and Pioneers both posted one run in the second.
  • Olson led off the third with an infield single which was quickly followed by a double down the left field line by sophomore Zachary Ardito. A double to right-center from Campana drove both Ardito and Olson in, putting the Hawks up, 8-6.
  • Sacred Heart quickly retook the lead in the fourth, scoring three runs off two hits, 9-8.
  • Walker worked a one-out walk in the sixth, setting up Ward who drove him in off a SAC fly to right, drawing the Hawks even at 9-9. Freshman Drew DeMartino grounded into a double play in the seventh, driving in Ardito, who led off the inning with a double down the left field line, to take a 10-9.
  • Sacred Heart tied the game back up in the eighth, scoring on a passed ball.
  • Hartford took the final lead of the game in the bottom of the eighth as junior Chris Sullivan singled to center to set up Ward up for his first home run of the season, to take the 12-10 decision
