THE LEAD:
Elon scored four unanswered runs to defeat the University of Hartford baseball team in game two of the weekend series, 4-1, on Saturday afternoon in North Carolina.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Hawks struck first, Senior TJ Ward opened the second inning by working a walk. Ward advanced to second off a sacrifice bunt from sophomore Jackson Olson before sophomore Zachary Ardito laced an RBI single through the right side, scoring Ward and putting the Hawks up, 1-0.
- Freshman Nicholas Dombkowski held the Phoenix at bay, only surrendering two hits in the first five frames and striking out ten.
- Elon broke through in the sixth inning, loading the bases off a pair of singles and a walk setting Hayden Platt ripped bases-clearing double to left field, putting the Phoenix up 3-1.
- Elon added one more run in the seventh off an RBI double to take the 4-1 decision.
INSIDE THE NUMBER
- Dombkowski's ten strikes outs top his previous career high of eight and were the second Hartford double-digit strikeout performance of the year, joining sophomore Nathan Florence who struck out 12 against CCSU on March 31.
- Senior Nick Campana, who went 2-for-4 on the day, extended his hitting streak to twelve games which include 10 multi-hit games.
