THE LEAD:
Elon topped the University of Hartford baseball team, 2-1, in a pitcher's duel in North Carolina on Sunday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Sophomore Nathan Florence and Elon's Ryan Conroy kept the scoreboard empty for the first two and a half innings before the Phoenix scored two in the third inning.
- Josh Broughton lead-off the third with a single to left, stole second and scored on an RBI single from Tyler Stanley. Stanley was later driven in by a sacrifice fly to put Elon up 2-0.
- Junior Chris Sullivan worked a lead-off walk in the fifth, advanced to third on a double from Senior TJ Ward before being driven in when junior Zachary Ardito grounded out to short, cutting the Phoenix lead to 2-1.
INSIDE THE NUMBER
- Florence went seventh and two thirds, only giving up four hits and a pair of earned runs and striking out nine in the loss.
- Senior Nick Campana extended his hitting streak to thirteen with his single in the sixth inning.
