THE LEAD:
The University of Hartford baseball team split its #AEBase doubleheader at UAlbany on Saturday afternoon.
The Great Danes took game one on a walk-off RBI single in the tenth, before Freshman lefty
Nicholas Dombkowski threw a complete game shutout in game two, as the Hawks topped UAlbany, 9-0.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1
- The Hawks started strong as junior Ashton Bardzell ripped an RBI single up the middle driving in senior Nicholas Campana, who reached on a leadoff walk. Bardzell was later plated off a senior TJ Ward fielder's choice. Sophomore Zachary Ardito kept the strong first inning going, singling through the left side to score Ward and take an early 3-0 lead.
- The Great Danes responded by score four runs in the first and second inning to take a 4-3 lead.
- Over the next three innings, the Hawks posted four runs unanswered runs, including a solo homer from Campana, to put the Hawks up 8-4.
- UAlbany responded scoring one in the seventh before exploding for four more in the eight to retake a 9-8 lead.
- The Hawks rallied in the ninth as Campana reached on an error by the shortstop, Bardzell drove him in with an RBI single to right to tie the game at nine,
- In the 10th, UAlbany's Nick Kondo sent a walk-off, RBI single to center to give the Great Danes the 10-9 decision.
Game 2
- Dombkowski posted another stellar perforce on the bump for the Hawks, throwing a complete game, four-hit shutout, striking out eight in the second game.
- Ward added another RBI on the day in the first inning, driving Campana in with an RBI single to left.
- Sophomore Bryce Walker followed up with an RBI double in the second, driving in junior Drew Holtgrieve to put the Hawks up 2-0.
- Hartford had a big sixth inning, scoring four runs as Campana and Bardzell both drove in runs, extending the Hawks lead to 7-0.
- The Hawks added two more in the sixth to take the 9-0 decision.
