THE LEAD:
The University of Hartford baseball team split its doubleheader at Stony Brook on Saturday afternoon.

A pair of freshmen shined in game two as Nicholas Dombkowski threw seven innings of shutout ball, only giving up five hits while striking out five as John Thrasher went 2-for-2, driving in two runs and scoring twice.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1
  • Stony Brook got on the board first, scoring off an RBI triple in the first and solo home run in the third to take a 2-0 in the first third of the game
  • Senior Nick Campana jump-started the Hawks scoring in the fourth, ripping his tenth home run of the season to cut the Seawolves lead to 2-1.
  • After Stony Brook extended their lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the fourth, the Hawks quickly knotted the game up in the fifth. Senior TJ Ward led off the frame singeing up the middle before sophomore Jackson Olson doubles down the left field line to put runners on the corners. Sophomore Zachary Ardito lined out to right, driving in Ward before Junior Drew Holtgrieve ripped an RBI single to right to drive Olson in and drawing the Hawks even at three.
  • The Seawolves regained the lead in the bottom half of the inning, scoring a pair of their own before scoring one run in the next three innings, extending their lead to 8-3.
  • The Hawks mounted a comeback in the ninth inning, loading the bases with one out. Olson singled to the pitcher to drive in junior Ashton Bardzell before Ardito flew out to right center to bring junior Chris Sullivan in, cutting the Stony Brook lead to 8-5. The Seawolves kept the comeback bid at bay, taking game one 8-5.

Game 2
  • The Hawks jumped out early, Olson led off the second inning doubling to right center and scoring when Holtgrieve grounded out to short, putting the Hawks up 1-0.
  • Following a walk by Bardzell, Sullivan ripped his fourth home run of the season, sending a two-run shot to right field to extend the Hawks lead to 3-0.
  • Thrasher ripped his fourth triple of the season in the fourth, later scoring on a wild pitch.
  • Thrasher drove in two more runs in the sixth inning, ripping a two-run single up the middle before scoring off a Campana RBI single to left field to give the Hawks the 7-0 decision.
