HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1
- The Hawks jumped out early, scoring four runs in the opening frame. Junior Ashton Bardzell ripped an infield single to drive in Senior Nick Campana to get the Hawks on the board. Fellow junior Chris Sullivan quickly followed up with his first career triple, driving in Bardzell and sophomore Bryce Walker before a sacrifice fly from sophomore Jackson Olson drove Sullivan in and putting the Hawks up 4-0 after a half inning.
- The Black Bears worked their way on the board in the bottom of the first, scoring on a SAC fly to right field to cut the Hawks lead to 4-1.
- Both squads exchanged runs in the second inning to bring the score to 5-2.
- The Hawks added single runs in the third and fourth, scoring off an RBI single from Ward in the third and a solo homer from freshman John Thrasher in the fourth, extending the Hawks lead to 7-2.
- Ward added two more RBIs to his tally in the sixth inning, lacing a double to left center to drive in Sullivan and Bardzell to grow the Hawks lead to 9-2.
- Sophomore right-hander Nathan Florence threw a stellar six innings, only surrendering two runs and striking out eight before sophomore Drew Farkas put the Black Bears always, throwing three innings of one-hit ball to give the Hawks the 9-2 decision.
Game 2
- A pitcher's duel early, the Hawks broke through first. In the fourth inning, Ward launched his second home run of the season to put the Hawks up 1-0.
- The Black Bears quickly responded off the bat of Jeremy Pena, who sent his own solo shot to left field, knotting the game up at one.
- Maine took the lead in the fifth inning. After loading the bases with two out, a balk gave Maine a 2-1 lead.
- Capitalizing on a leadoff triple, the Black Bears extended their lead to 3-1 in the sixth, which they would hold on to as they took game two.
Inside the Numbers
- The Hawks pitching staff surpassed the 2013 staff for the program-record in strikeouts in a single season and sit a 355 for the year.
