THE LEAD:
Behind a stellar pitching performance by sophomore
Nathan Florence, the University of Hartford baseball team completed its three-game sweep over UMBC on Sunday afternoon in West Hartford.
Florence threw eight innings, only giving one run and striking out seven Retrievers to pick up his second victory of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Senior TJ Ward reached on a one-out error in the second, later driven in off a sophomore Zachary Ardito groundout to put the Hawks on the board, 1-0.
- Senior Nick Campana reached on a fielder's choice in the third and scored later in the inning when fellow senior Cam Belliveau stole second base, allowing Campana to score on the throw. Junior Chris Sullivan singled through the left side, driving in Belliveau to extend the Hawks lead to 3-0.
- Junior Jackson Olson led-off the fourth inning by working a walk and was platted by a sacrifice fly by freshman John Thrasher later that inning, 4-0.
- Junior Ashton Bardzell started off the fifth inning by lacing a single up the middle before being driven in by a Ward single with one out, putting the Hawks up 5-0.
- The Retrievers broke through in the eighth as Matt Campbell launched a solo homer to left, but Senior Sebastian DiMauro shut down UMBC in the ninth to give the Hawks the 5-1 decision.
