Lafayette Nips Volleyball in Four to End Winning Streak

EASTON, Pa. – Lafayette rallied back to win three-straight sets and end Hartford volleyball's six-match winning streak with a 3-1 decision in the Hawks' final match of the Lafayette Invitational. Hartford, which finished the tournament with a 2-1 mark, dips to 7-4 while the Leopards improve to 4-7 on the season.

Junior Jenna Bridges topped a previous career high of 21 kills set last weekend with 23 to lead all hitters, while sophomore Megan Anderson delivered 49 assists to pace the offense. Bridges and sophomore Brittany Braun were named to the All-Tournament Team.

LAFAYETTE 3, HARTFORD 1 (15-25, 25-23, 27-25, 25-18)
  • SET ONE: A back-and-forth start resulted in an 8-8 tie early on. But Hartford got hot and rallied for a 7-1 run to break the game open and take a six-point advantage (15-9). The Hawks maintained their cushion, pushing ahead by a 19-14 count before coasting to the win behind a 6-1 spurt.
  • SET TWO: Hartford jumped out to a quick 8-1 lead in the second set and led by five at 18-13 before allowing the Leopards to claw back. Five-straight Lafayette points tied things up at 18-18, and with the score knotted up again at 23-23, the Leopards clinched the set on an Audrey Mangum service ace and a kill by Grace Tulevech.
  • SET THREE: The third set was tightly contested down to the wire, with Hartford's 5-2 edge marking the largest lead taken by either side. With the score tied for the 15th time at 25-all, Lafayette used a Hartford attack error and a kill from Leanna Deegan to take a 2-1 advantage in the match.
  • SET FOUR: Lafayette took its first lead – a 14-13 edge – and held on to secure the four-set victory. The Hawks kept things close down the stretch, but were never able to reclaim the lead as the Leopards expanded on an 18-17 advantage and ended the match by scoring seven of the final eight points.
  • NOTES & HIGHLIGHTS: Bridges has now hit in double figures in each of her last seven matches … senior Paulina Modestow added 13 kills for Hartford.
