Volleyball Comes Up Short to Stony Brook in AE Opener

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – Junior Jenna Bridges recorded double figures in kills for the ninth-straight match, but it wasn't enough for the Hartford volleyball team as the Hawks dropped a 3-0 decision to Stony Brook in its America East opener on Friday night.
 
Bridges registered a match-best 14 kills for the Hawks, who dip to 7-5 overall and 0-1 in the America East. Paced by a 12-kill effort from Jordan Gels, the Seawolves improve to 7-8 and 1-0 in conference play.
 
STONY BROOK 3, HARTFORD 0 (30-28, 25-18, 25-18)
  • SET ONE: Hartford, which took a 14-9 lead to start the match, pushed ahead by a 21-16 count. But Stony Brook posted a furious comeback and came back to tie up the set at 24-24. The score would be knotted up four more times before the Seawolves pulled away to take the 30-28 decision.
  • SET TWO: Stony Brook delivered a 5-1 run in the second set and never looked back. Building a 23-18 advantage, the Seawolves sealed the set behind back-to-back kills from Emily Costello and Gels.
  • SET THREE: Despite trailing by as many as five on two occasions, the Hawks rallied back to slash the deficit down to one late in the third set. Trailing the Seawolves, 21-20, Hartford was unable to complete the comeback, as Stony Brook scored four of the final five points of the set to clinch the match.
  • NOTES & HIGHLIGHTS: Sophomore setter Megan Anderson dished out 41 assists, while Bridges paced the defense with five blocks … Stony Brook placed three players with double-figure kills, as McKyla Brooks and Maria Poole registered 11 and 10, respectively.
