WEST HARTFORD, Conn. — A dominant effort on both ends of the field led the Hartford women's soccer team to a 4-1 victory against visiting UMBC on Sunday. Reigning America East Player of the Week
Kaila Lozada scored twice to pace the Hawks (9-1-2), who extend their unbeaten streak to nine matches.
Hartford improves to 2-0-1 in conference action with the victory while the Retrievers (1-11-0) dip to 0-3-0 in the America East.
HARTFORD 4, UMBC 1
- After senior Hayley Nolan came inches from putting the Hawks on the scoreboard with a blast off the crossbar in the 13th minute, Lozada corralled a feed from Nolan and found the back of the net 75 seconds later on a shot from 12 yards out.
- Lozada struck again for Hartford in the opening half on a blast from just outside the six-yard box. UMBC keeper Jade Wilkins stopped the junior's shot, but the deflection bounced over the goal line to put Hartford up by two.
- The Hawks saw two more shots slam off the crossbar before junior defender Skylar Vitiello headed in a perfectly placed ball by senior Julia Carr on a corner kick to make it a 3-0 lead in the 52nd minute.
- Another corner kick sent into the box by Carr allowed Hartford to push its advantage to four goals in the 61st minute. Sophomore defender Magalie Kayrouz got her head on the ball from point-blank range to provide the Hawks with the comfortable cushion.
- The Retrievers managed to get one goal back down the final stretch, as Christina Corbi scored on a penalty kick in the 79th minute.
- The Hawks held commanding advantages in shots (17-3) and corner kicks (5-1).
HARTFORD NOTES
- Hartford's current unbeaten streak of nine matches (7-0-2) marks the program's longest since 2011, which spanned 16 games (13-0-3).
- With nine wins, the Hawks have surpassed last season's total of eight.
- Lozada's two scores boosted her season point total to 18, which matches last season's total.
