The first half was a battle of the midfield as neither team could muster any serious threats on goal. UMBC had the best chance of the opening stanza as Ryan Becher saw his 25th minute header rattle off the post and bounce into the arms of Slayton. The two sides continued to battle in the midfield as they took the 0-0 score-line into the break. The Hawks outshot UMBC 5-3 in the opening 45 minutes.

The second half of regulation featured golden opportunities for both sides that were denied by excellent saves. UMBC saw the first opportunity in the 50th minute as Julian Conze unleashed a shot from inside the six-yard box that saw Slayton dive down to his left to deny the Retrievers the game's opening goal. It would then be the Hawks' turn five minutes later when junior Rasmus Karlsson collected a loose ball inside the box and fired it on goal, only to be denied by UMBC goalkeeper Quantrell Jones.

Junior Nyrik Anotine had the best opportunity to score in extra time as his 97th minute strike struck the left post. Neither team would get the game-winning goal as both teams went home with a point in conference play, drawing 0-0.
