BURLINGTON, Vt. — The University of Hartford's men's soccer team earned a spot in the 2019 America East Championship game with a thrilling 3-2 overtime victory over Vermont on Wednesday evening. Junior
Nyrik Antoine scored the game-winner in the 98th to send the Hawks to its first title game since 2016.
Hartford moves to 12-4-4 overall with the win, while Vermont closes out its 2019 campaign with a 11-6-1 record.
HARTFORD 3, VERMONT 2 OT
The first half started out slow with neither team getting a great scoring opportunity.
Jimmy Slayton would be called into action eight minutes into the game when he made a fine save to his right to deny the Catamounts an early goal. The Hawks would be the first to strike in the 19th minute as Jovante Etienne rifled his shot into the bottom right corner to give Hartford the 1-0 lead. Hartford would continue to pile no the pressure and would be rewarded in the 40th minute when
Sergi Martinez got his name on the scoresheet, doubling the Hawks advantage. Vermont would cut the lead in half in the 44th minute as the Hawks entered the break leading, 2-1.
The second half started out like the first as Slayton was called into action twice to make a pair of fine saves. The Hawks defense would keep the Catamounts at bay until the 79th minute when Vermont found the equalizer. Neither team could win it in regulation as the game headed to overtime. It wouldn't take long for Hartford to find the winner as
Nyrik Antoine netted his strike into the top corner eight minutes into the first overtime period to send the Hawks into the America East Championship Final.
