Women's Soccer Advances to AE Semis Behind Vitiello's OT Heroics

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. — The Hartford women's soccer team advances to the semifinals of the America East Tournament after defeating UMass Lowell in double overtime on Al-Marzook Field on Sunday. Senior Skylar Vitiello scored the golden goal in the 105th minute to propel the third-seeded Hawks past the sixth-seeded River Hawks.

Hartford moves to 9-6-2 overall with the win, while UMass Lowell closes out its 2019 campaign with a 4-11-2 record.

Hartford keeper Maia Perez and her counterpart Annerens Tijm came away with two saves apiece in the opening half, as the match was scoreless at intermission.

UMass Lowell threatened in the second half, but the Hawks dodged a bullet when Emily Nelson's shot from on top of the box just cleared the scoreboard in the 72nd minute. Minutes later, Perez came up with what was arguably her biggest save on the afternoon, as she rejected a point-blank-range header from Lily Fabian to keep the match scoreless.

The Hawks, who had the better of play in the first overtime period, nearly ended the match in the 95th minute when senior Madison Stabile's shot from 50-yards out went just over the crossbar. With just over five minutes remaining in the match, senior Sierra Stone set up Stabile, who finished on the lone shot attempt of the stanza.
