PROVIDENCE, R.I. –Hartford women's hoops fell in the opening round of the WNIT to Providence, 71-54, Thursday evening at Alumni Hall.
Senior
Lindsey Abed scored a team-high 14 points, as the Hawks finish the season 23-11 overall. Jovana Nogic scored a game-high 27 points, as the Friars improve to 18-15 on the season and move onto the second round of the WNIT.
PROVIDENCE 71 HARTFORD 54
Providence came out firing in the opening quarter, starting the game on a 15-2 run capped off by a layup by Andrea Cooper with 5:55 remaining in the opening period. Hartford responded with a run of its own, outscoring the Friars, 13-5, to make the first quarter score 20-15.
Hartford took its first lead of the game with 7:09 remaining in the first-half, as sophomore
Jade Young hit a three-pointer to make the score, 23-21. Providence came back to tie the game midway through the period at 29-29, before they scored five of the final eight points of the half to take a 34-32 lead into the locker room.
The Friars took control of the game in the third quarter, outscoring the Hawks 17-9 in the period to take a 51-41 lead heading into the fourth. Hartford closed within eight as Abed knocked down a three with 5:54 remaining in the game to make the score 57-49. Providence however closed out the game on a 14-5 run to wrap up the opening round victory, 71-54.

- With her team-high 14 points, Abed ends her career with 1,397 which is fourth all-time in program history
- Hartford finished the season with 20 or more wins for the first time since the 2012-13 season, and the 23 wins are the most wins since the 2009-10 team won 27
- This was Hartford's fifth appearance in the WNIT, and its first since 2013. The Hawks are now 1-5 in postseason WNIT tournament
- For the 19th time this season, Hartford finished with 20 or more points off turnovers, scoring 21 off of 22 Providence turnovers tonight
