Baseball Blanks River Hawks in Series Opener

LOWELL, Mass. –Hartford baseball opened the weekend with its third straight America East game, topping UMass Lowell, 5-0, Friday night.
 
Junior Jackson Olson went 2-5 with a double and a run scored, as the Hawks improve to 7-12 overall and 3-1 in the America East. Ted Leathersich, Oscar Marchena and Robert Gallagher each finished with a double, as the River Hawks fall to 5-18 on the year and 2-2 in conference play.

After three scoreless innings to start the game, Hartford tallied its first run of the game as sophomore Drew DeMartino knocked a sacrifice fly to right field, bringing senior Ashton Bardzell and giving the Hawks a 1-0 lead.
 
Hartford added to its lead in the top of the sixth, starting with an RBI single from freshman Donnie Cahoon. The Hawks then pulled off a double steal for their third run, as DeMartino swiped home, making the score 3-0.
 
Hartford added two more runs and sophomore Nicholas Dombkowski, freshman Will Nowak and junior Drew Farkas combined for the shutout, as the Hawks won their third conference game of the season, 5-0.
 
 
 NEWS AND NOTES
  • Dombkowski (1-2) was dominant on the mound for Hartford, finishing with a career-high 11 strikeouts and allowed only three hits over seven innings of shutout ball 
  • Bardzell went 2-4 with a double and a run score, while junior Bryce Walker was also 2-4
  • Junior Nik Pagan and senior Drew Holtgrieve both recorded the Hawks other two RBI
  • Hartford has now won three straight America East games, and six of its last eight overall
