LOWELL, Mass. –Hartford baseball won its second America East series of the season, falling in game one, 3-2, but coming back to win game two, 7-5, against UMass Lowell Saturday afternoon.
Junior
Jackson Olson wrapped up a solid weekend with two double and three RBI, as the Hawks improve to 8-13 overall and 5-2 in the America East. Redshirt junior Oscar Marchena finished the doubleheader with three RBI, as the River Hawks fall to 6-20 on the year and 3-4 in conference play.
GAME ONE: UMASS LOWELL 3 HARTFORD 2
Hartford wasted little time scoring in game one as junior
Jackson Olson laced a double the left field line, plating junior
Nik Pagan and senior
Ashton Bardzell and giving the Hawks a 2-0 lead.
UMass Lowell answered in the fourth, tying the game on a single to right center field by Marchena, plating junior Cam Climo and senior Steven Passatempo. Freshman Robert Gallagher then brought in sophomore Vinnie Martin with a fielder's choice.
The Hawks threatened in the top of the sixth as sophomore
Drew DeMartino reached on an error and then advanced to third after Olson singled to right center field. Olson stole second to put two runners in scoring position, but Hartford then went down in order to end the inning and wrapped up game two of the series over the next three innings, 3-2.
GAME TWO: HARTFORD 7 UMASS LOWELL 5
With Hartford holding a 2-1 lead, the Hawks broke open the game in fifth innings starting with a RBI single by senior
Chris Sullivan, plating junior
Zachary Ardito. Hartford then loaded the bases later in the inning and walked four-straight times, making the score 7-1.
UMass Lowell mounted a comeback starting with two runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh, cutting Hartford's advantage to two (7-5). With runners on first and third and two outs, Marchena stepped in for the River Hawks as the winning run. Freshman
Will Nowak however shut the door on any UMass Lowell comeback, striking out Marchena for the final out and giving the Hawks the 7-5 victory.
NEWS AND NOTES
- Senior Sebastian DiMauro (2-0) earned his second win of the season in game two, allowing two earned runs on four hits and struck out five
- Nowak registered his second save of the season, striking out two of the runner batters he faced in the final inning of game two to secure the series victory for Hartford
- Sullivan finished the day 4-8 with a double and three RBI. Sullivan leads the team, batting .300 with 20 RBI
- After starting the season 0-10, the Hawks have now won eight of their last 11 games, including their first two America East series of the season
