Pioneers Slip Past Hawks in Midweek Matchup

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – Hartford baseball fell to Sacred Heart, 5-4, in non-conference action Tuesday afternoon at Fiondella Field.
 
Senior Drew Holtgrieve went 1-3 with two RBI, as the Hawks fall to 8-14 overall. Junior Elijah Brown was a perfect 3-3 at the plate with two runs scored, as the Pioneers improve to 9-17 on the year.

Hartford jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning, starting with a RBI double to center field by senior Chris Sullivan. Senior Ashton Bardzell then plated Sullivan with a single to center, giving the Hawks the early two run advantage
 
Sacred Heart, however, answered in the fifth and sixth inning, combining to score five runs off of seven hits to move ahead 5-2.
 
Hartford rallied in the sixth inning to make the score 5-4. With junior Jackson Olson on third and freshman Donnie Cohoon on second, Holtgrieve laced a single to right center field, scoring both runners and moving the Hawks within one run.
 
Hartford brought the winning run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth, but could not capitalize as the Pioneers slipped away with the 5-4 win.
 
 NEWS AND NOTES
  • Five different pitchers combined to allow five runs on 12 hits and strike out seven
  • Sullivan finished the game with two doubles, moving his team-leading total to eight
  • Bardzell, Olson and Cohoon each swiped a base for the Hawks
  • After starting the season 0-10, the Hawks have now won eight of their last 12 games, including their first two America East series of the season
