DeMartino Plays Hero in Baseball's Walk-Off Win Against Minutemen

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. –Sophomore Drew DeMartino's RBI double in the bottom of the 10th gave Hartford its first extra innings win of the season, topping UMass, 5-4, Tuesday afternoon.
 
DeMartino went 3-5 with a double and a game-high two RBI,as the Hawks improve to 14-26 overall. Senior Alec Norton finished with a team-high two runs scored, as the Minutemen fall to 16-21 on the season. 
 
HARTFORD 5 UMASS 4 (10)   
Hartford put themselves in front in the third inning, scoring four runs with two outs. Senior Chris Sullivan started the rally, reaching on an error by the second basemen and plating sophomore John Thrasher. After a walk by senior Ashton Bardzell, freshman Devin Kellogg singled, scoring Sullivan from second. Bardzell also came across on the play after a throwing error by the catcher. DeMartino finished up the inning for the Hawks, slashing a single to right center field, bringing Kellogg in from second and making the score 4-0.
 
UMass chipped away at Hartford's lead, scoring two runs in the fourth and then a run in both the sixth and the eighth pushing the game to extra innings. 
 
After freshman Will Nowak held the Minutemen scoreless in the top of the 10th, Kellogg earned a two out walk in the bottom of the inning. DeMartino then stepped in and knocked a double down the right field line, bringing Kellogg all the way around from third and giving the Hawks the 5-4 walk-off victory. 
 
NEWS AND NOTES
  • Nowak (5-1) earned the win in relief, scattering two hits over 2.2 innings of work while striking out three
  • Nowak leads the team in wins, saves (four) and ERA (2.16)
  • This is Hartford's first extra innings win since March 30, 2017, when the Hawks topped Holy Cross 7-6 in 10 innings
  • DeMartino's three hits matched a career-high 
  • Hartford's win today snaps a five-game losing streak
