Baseball Surges Past Black Bears Late for AE Series Victory

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. –Hartford baseball earned the series victory two game to one, taking game three, 3-1, Sunday morning at Fiondella Field.
 
Sophomore Drew DeMartino led the Hawks with two hits,as the Hawks improve to 19-29 overall and 11-10 in conference play. Sophomore Joe Bramanti registered the game's only RBI, as the Black Bears fall to 14-29 and 10-10 in the America East.

For the third-straight time this weekend Maine took a lead in the first inning, scoring one run for the early advantage.
 
Hartford was held silent until the bottom of the seventh, when the Hawks took advantage of two miscues by the Black Bears. The inning looked like it would come to an end as senior Chris Sullivan looped a fly ball to left field with two outs. The ball however dropped in off the left fielder's glove, scoring redshirt-sophomore Bryce Ramsay from third and sophomore John Thrasher from first, giving Hartford its first lead of the game, 2-1. 
 
In the next at bat, senior Ashton Bardzell reached on a throwing error by the third basemen, bringing Sullivan around to score from second for the 3-1 advantage after seven.
 
The Hawks held Maine scoreless the rest of the way to wrap up the series and take game three, 3-1.
 
NEWS AND NOTES
  • Senior Billy DeVito recorded his 11th start of the season, allowing one run on three hits and striking out seven
  • Junior Joe Grassett (1-0) earned his first career win in relief, entering the game in the seventh with runners on first and second and forcing a fly ball to right for the final out
  • Redshirt-sophomore Jason Johndrow tallied his first career save of the season, pitching a scoreless ninth inning
  • The America East series win is Hartford's fifth of the season
  • Hartford has won five of its last six games
