Baseball Blasts Two Home Runs in Victory Over Blackbirds

HARTFORD, Conn. –In Hartford's final non-conference game of the season, the Hawks took down LIU Brooklyn, 16-5, Tuesday night at Dunkin' Donuts Park.
 
Senior Ashton Bardzell and sophomore John Thrasher each hit home runs,as the Hawks improve to 20-29 overall. Senior Gregory Vaughn Jr, went 1-4 with a RBI, as the Blackbirds fall to 19-31 on the season.

Hartford got off to a hot start in the first, scoring six runs in the opening frame. Junior Nick Pagan jumped started the inning, lacing a double to right center field with the bases loaded, plating senior Chris Sullivan and junior Jackson Olson for the 2-0 lead. Sophomore Drew DeMartino kept the hot start going, singling up the middle and bringing Bardzell and Pagan around to score. Junior Robert Carmody and sophomore John Thrasher wrapped up the first inning with RBI singles giving Hartford a 6-0 advantage after one.
 
After the Blackbirds scored two runs in the top of the third to make the score 6-2, the Hawks answered in the bottom of the fifth. With two runners on and one out, Bardzell blasted a 3-2 pitch over the left field fence, pushing Hartford's advantage to seven (9-2).
 
The Hawks continued to tack on runs in the bottom of the seventh ,starting with a bases clearing double by Holtgrieve, making the score 12-2. Thrasher immediately followed up Holtgrieve's double with a home run down the left field line, pushing Hartford's advantage to 12 runs (14-2). With two outs, Hartford continued to surge through the inning with junior Bryce Walker and DeMartino both record RBI, increasing the Hawks' lead to 16-2.
 
The Blackbirds added three more runs in the eighth inning, but the Hawks finished off its final non-conference game of the season, winning by a final score of 16-4.
 
NEWS AND NOTES
  • Junior Drew Farkas (1-0) earned the win, pitching two scoreless innings in relief
  • Hartford recorded a season-high 16 runs and 20 hits
  • It is the second time this season Bardzell has hit a home run at Dunkin' Donuts Park after swatting a grand slam against URI earlier this season
  • Bardzell also hit his team-leading sixth triple of the season
  • Bardzell, DeMartino, Holtgrieve and Thrasher each finished the game with three RBI
  • Hartford has won six of its last seven games

Hartford wraps up the regular season with its final America East against UAlbany. First pitch at the twinbill is set for 12 p.m. on Friday, while Saturday's game is slated for a 12 p.m. start.
