RIVERSIDE, Calif. —The Hawks second half comeback came up short as UC Riverside held on for a 2-1 win on Sunday night. Sophomore defender
Nick Benjamin scored the lone goal for Hartford, which was the first of his career. The Highlanders improved to 2-0 with the win while the Hawks fell to 0-2.
UC RIVERSIDE 2, HARTFORD 1
The Hawks would come out strong in the first half as sophomore
Sergi Martinez just missed his second minute strike over the crossbar. UC Riverside would then take control of the game forcing senior goalkeeper
Jimmy Slayton into making a fine save before taking the lead through Roberto Garcia-Vargas in the 24
th minute. The Highlanders would end the first half with a 6-2 advantage in shots.
UC Riverside would quickly break down the field early in the second half and double the lead after Alex Jung tucked home a rebound after Slayton made the initial save in the 48
th minute. The 2-0 advantage would only last four minutes as Benjamin slotted home his first career goal after receiving a pass from
Kamer Nuhiu in the 52
nd minute to cut the lead in half. The Hawks would then rattle off three consecutive shots shortly after the goal, but the Highlanders defense would stand firm, allowing only two shots in the final half hour of play to preserve the 2-1 win.

- Slayton finished with three saves on eight shots faced
- The Hawks held a 11-8 advantage in shots, out shooting the Highlanders 9-2 in the second half

- Benjamin led the offense effort with two shots, both of which were on goal
- UC Riverside picked up the win in the first ever meeting between the two programs on Sunday night
