ALBANY, N.Y. —The Hartford women's soccer team cut a two-goal halftime deficit in half, but was unable to complete the comeback on Sunday as the Hawks dropped a 2-1 decision at defending league champion UAlbany in their America East opener. Hartford dips to 3-5-1 overall, while the Great Danes move to 4-3-1 with the victory.
UALBANY 2, HARTFORD 1
Meghan Cavanaugh put the Great Danes on the scoreboard early, finding the back of the net just 3:43 after kickoff on a shot from well beyond the 18-yard box. UAlbany would double its lead with less than three minutes remaining in the half after senior
Madison Stabile received a red card on a play inside the box. Gina Bracamonte converted on the ensuing penalty kick to give the Great Danes a 2-0 lead heading into the halftime break.
Despite an 11-on-10 disadvantage, the Hawks slashed their deficit in half when sophomore
Izzy Lachcik put the finishing touches on a ball from senior
Sierra Stone. Junior goalkeeper
Maia Perez made four great saves down the stretch to keep UAlbany at bay — including two highlight-reel worthy stops in the 60th and 73rd minutes — but Hartford came up short in its search for the equalizer.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE & HARTFORD NOTES
- Perez finished with seven saves for the Hawks
- The Great Danes finished with a 19-8 advantage in shots
- UAlbany goalkeeper Sophia Chen was forced into action three times
