WEST HARTFORD, Conn. — Senior
Jenna Bridges delivered a career-high 31 kills on Friday to lead Hartford past Stony Brook, 3-1, in both teams' America East opener on Friday inside the Hartford Volleyball Gym. The Hawks improve to 9-7 with their fourth straight win, while the Seawolves dip to 4-11 on the season.
Junior
Megan Anderson added a career-high 58 assists in the victory.
HARTFORD 3, STONY BROOK 1 (23-25, 25-17, 25-19, 25-23)
- SET ONE:After falling behind early and trailing by as many as four, the Hawks clawed their way back to take a lead at 15-14. But Stony Brook used a 4-1 spurt to regain a lead it would not relinquish, despite Hartford pulling within one at 24-23.
- SET TWO:The Hawks fell behind early in set two, but came back to tie up the game at 9-9. With the score knotted up again at 12-12, Hartford put forth a big rally and took a 21-13 lead behind a furious 9-1 run. Stony Brook would close the gap to five, but three-straight points from the Hawks sealed the 25-17 win.
- SET THREE: Three lead changes andeight ties resulted in a 16-16 deadlock between the Hawks and Seawolves in set three. But four straight points, including a pair of kills from freshman Robin Helms, provided Hartford with a large enough cushion to close out the set with the 25-19 win.
- SET FOUR: Stony Brook ran out of the gates with an early lead and pushed ahead by as many as eight at 18-10 in the fourth set. The Hawks refused to go down easy, though as they rallied to pull the two teams even at 22-22 on an Abby Nash kill. The Seawolves would capitalize on a Hartford service error, but three-straight points fueled by kills by Bridges and Helms completed the comeback and sealed the victory for Hartford.
- HARTFORD NOTES & HIGHLIGHTS:Hartford's win over Stony Brook is its first since Oct. 15, 2016 … the Hawks dropped the previous six matches with the Seawolves …Hartford hit .366 on the match, while holding the Seawolves to a .229 clip … Nash and freshman Maddie Lindsay added 14 kills apiece … Bridges added six blocks as Hartford held a 16-12 advantage in the category … Liz Pulver registered 17 kills to lead Stony Brook.
