Baseball Downs Stetson, 6-3, in 2020 Season-Opener

DELAND, Fla. – Behind a strong start from junior Nicholas Dombkowski, Hartford baseball defeated Stetson on the road, 6-3, to open the 2020 season with a win on Friday evening at Melching Field.

Domkowski tossed six innings of one-run ball, while striking out six, as the Hawks open the season at 1-0. Senior Zachary Ardito led the offense with two RBI and redshirt-junior Tyler Coppo added three hits and knocked in a run, as the Hatters fell to 4-1 on the year. 

HARTFORD 6 STETSON 3  

Robert Carmody broke the scoreless tie in the second with a sac-fly, followed by an RBI single from Coppo in the third to give the Hawks an early 2-0 lead. Holding a 2-1 lead in the sixth, Hartford was able to plate a run due to a Stetson error.

Leading 4-1 in the eighth, Ardito drilled a two-run single to left center to give the Hawks a commanding 6-3 lead. The Hatters were able to score two unearned runs in the eighth, but Will Nowak held the lead and earned his first save of the season in the win.

 NEWS AND NOTES

  • Dombkowski struck out six batters and surrendered just two walks and two hits en route to his first win of the season 

  • Nowak earned his first save of the season after giving up no earned runs and one hit in 2.2 innings of work

  • Coppo went 3-for-5 with three runs scored and an RBI in the win

  • Tim Dickson knocked in a run as well
