Men's Hoops Drops Heartbreaker to First-Place UVM, 69-68

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. — Grad student Traci Carter put the Hawks ahead on a pull-up jumper with 11 seconds left, but Ryan Davis scored on the ensuing possession in the final seconds to lead Vermont past Hartford, 69-68, on Saturday night inside Reich Family Pavilion. Carter led all scorers with a career-high 26 points, while classmate Malik Ellison compiled his seventh double-double of the season (23 points, 12 rebounds).

The Hawks (13-12) fall to 6-4 with their second-straight loss, while the Catamounts, who were led by 18 points from Everett Duncan, improve to 19-6 overall and 9-1 in the conference.

The Hawks came out of the gates hot, running out to a 22-9 lead with 9:09 left behind 12 points from Ellison. But Vermont rallied back, holding the Hawks to just one field goal — a Moses Flowers three-pointer — to take a 28-26 edge into the break.

Vermont continued to keep the offense going and eventually pushed its lead into double figures on a 3-for-4 start from behind the arc. Facing an 11-point deficit midway through the half, the Hawks clawed their way back, using eight-straight points from Carter to pull within six. Hartford would complete the comeback late on Carter's jumper from the free-throw line, but that heroic shot was spoiled by Davis' layup in the final seconds.
