Hawks, River Hawks Play to 2-2 Draw

LOWELL, Mass. — The Hartford women's soccer team played UMass Lowell to a 2-2 draw in America East action at Cushing Field on Thursday evening. The Hawks took a lead in each half on goals from sophomore Chloe Layne and classmate Kelly Severini, but the River Hawks countered with scores from Ioanna Papatheodorour and Dunja Mostarac, the latter coming in the 71st minute to eventually force overtime.

Earning the crucial point in conference play, the Hawks (7-3-3) move to 2-2-2 in America East play. The River Hawks (7-4-2) remain tied for first with Binghamton in the league standings with a 4-1-1 mark.

HARTFORD 2, UMASS LOWELL 2 (2ot)
Each team would strike the scoreboard in the opening half, and again in the second half, to send the match into overtime.

The Hawks got on the board first in the 26th minute thanks to a miscue by the River Hawks' back line, and a heads-up play by sophomore Imani Jenkins. After intercepting a pass between Umass Lowell defenders on a clear attempt, Jenkins sent a ball into the middle to Layne, who one-timed a left-footed shot from just inside of 18-yards to the back of the net. Papatheodorour answered for the River Hawks 13 minutes later, converting on a penalty kick after a hand ball was called on the Hawks.

Hartford was able to regain the lead on a set piece in the 69th minute, when Severini's header off a corner kick from Layne deflected to the right post. But less than two minutes later, Mostarac found herself in the right place at the right time, as she headed in the game-tying score from just outside the six-yard box.

Papatheodorour had the best — and final — look of the first overtime period for either side. In the closing seconds of the period she found herself in a one-on-one with Hartford goalkeeper Maia Perez, but sent her shot over the crossbar. Each side had opportunities to end the game in the opening part of the second overtime period, as Emily Nelson's strike went off the left post for the River Hawks, and redshirt-senior Andrea Carina Costa Garcia's volley went just high.
