Gryczewski Nets Pair as Hawks, Bulldogs Draw

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The Hartford men's soccer team kept its unbeaten streak intact Tuesday night, battling Yale to a 2-2 draw on Al-Marzook Field. The Hawks got a pair of goals from freshman Patrick Gryczewski, but Yale countered with goals from Sandor Pelle and Eric Lagos, the latter coming in the 88th minute to force overtime.

It marked the final non-conference matchup of the year for Hartford (3-6-3, 1-2-0 America East), which is 2-0-1 in its past three games. The Hawks will return to conference play Saturday (Oct. 9) when they host UAlbany at 7 p.m.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Gryczewski got the Hawks on the board in the 42nd minute, redirecting a loose ball off the foot of teammate Jason Addi low towards the far post and past Bulldogs goalkeeper Elian Haddock. Pelle knotted the score at 1-1 early in the second half before Gryczewski notched his second score of the night, in the 77th minute.

The Hawks were just minutes away from closing out a third consecutive victory when Yale took advantage of a Hartford foul. Sigfus Anderson lofted a ball deep into the box from about 40 yards out, finding Eric Lagos for the game-tying header with less than three minutes left to play.

INSIDE THE BOX & NOTES
  • Gryczewski's goals were the first two of his Hartford career
  • He became the first Hawk to score twice in a game since Nadav Datner scored a pair against Binghamton on March 14, 2021
  • Gryczewski is the first Hartford freshman to net two goals in the same game since Jeff Tryon recorded a hat trick against UMass Lowell on Nov. 6, 2013
  • Both of Yale's goals came against freshman goalkeeper Nate DiLoreto, who replaced starting keeper Rotem Fadida at halftime
  • It was just the second time Fadida has left the pitch this season
  • Hartford dominated in shots (16-8) and led in corner kicks (7-4)
  • Tuesday was the fifth time Hartford has allowed two or more goals, with the Hawks owning an 0-4-1 record in those contests
  • After scoring five goals through their first nine games the Hawks have score six goals in their past three

NEXT ON TAP
The Hawks will head into the heart of their conference schedule, hosting UAlbany (6-3, 1-1 AE) on Saturday (Oct. 9) at 7 p.m. The Hawks hold a 10-9-3 edge in the all-time series. The teams split the spring 2021 season series, with Hartford winning 2-0 in Albany, N.Y. (March 5) and the Great Danes returning the favor with a 2-1 win in West Hartford (April 9). UAlbany has won its past two matches, against Rhode Island and NJIT, but all three of the Great Danes' losses have come on the road.
